DTE Energy seeks proposals for capacity and energy

DETROIT – As part of its commitment to ensure long-term power reliability and produce cleaner energy for its 2.2 million customers, DTE Energy has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) to solicit bids to potentially acquire a natural gas-fired power plant.

DTE is seeking up to 1,200 MW of energy to replace a portion of the capacity from three coal-fired power plants that are scheduled for retirement by 2023 with cleaner, reliable and affordable energy sources.

Power plants associated with the RFP must be located within the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) Zone 7, which covers the majority of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. Proposals submitted will be evaluated in conjunction with DTE’s recently announced plans to build a state-of-the-art natural gas turbine plant, expected to be located on existing DTE property adjacent to the Belle River power plant in China Township, Mich.

“While we have announced plans to build a new natural gas plant, DTE is assessing all options for new power capacity, including the purchase of a natural gas plant to produce electricity,” said DTE Electric President Trevor Lauer. “It is DTE’s responsibility to ensure our investment decisions meet our customers’ energy needs – with affordability and reliability among our top priorities. These important decisions will play a significant role in shaping DTE’s future power capacity.”

This new generation will provide long-term reliability and will add to DTE’s recent acquisitions of natural gas generating capacity. In 2015, the company acquired the 732 megawatt Renaissance Power Plant in Carson City and the 350 megawatt Dean Peaker Plant in East China Township to assure adequate generating capacity for DTE customers during periods of high demand for power.

Notices of Intent to Bid are due by March 17, 2017 and bids are due at 5 p.m. (EST) April 14, 2017.
